An ATV for the city and mushroom hunting: A safe bet or an expensive habit?

Finance: An ATV for the City: Is a 4x4 Only Worth It for Mushroom Hunting?

Many used-car buyers in 2026 are under the illusion that they absolutely need all-wheel drive to get by in the Czech Republic. The argument is always the same: “What if it rains in October when I go mushroom hunting?” The reality, however, is that these cars spend 95% of their time in city traffic jams and on dry pavement. For the rational buyer, the 4×4 system thus becomes more of an invisible money pit than a useful helper.

Why does driving a 4x4 in the city do more harm than good?

All-wheel drive doesn’t come cheap, not even on a used car, where the initial price difference may seem negligible. A 4×4 system adds extra weight (often 60 to 100 kg) and increases internal mechanical friction.

In city traffic, where you’re constantly accelerating and braking, this extra weight means one thing: higher fuel consumption. For a diesel SUV, expect an increase of 0.5 to 1 liter per 100 km. If you drive 15,000 km a year, mostly in the city, the “mushroom tax” will cost you several thousand crowns in fuel alone, without you ever actually using the all-wheel drive.

A service fee for a "sense of security"

With used cars, the biggest risk is the previous owner’s neglect of maintenance. Systems like Haldex (used by the VW Group, Volvo, and Korean brands) require regular oil changes every 60,000 km (or 3 years). Most used-car dealers will tell you that the fluid lasts a lifetime—that’s the quickest way to seize the pump.

Specific risks associated with used ATVs:

  • Clutch pump: If the oil hasn't been changed, the pump will burn out. Repairs in 2026 will cost between 8,000 and 15,000 CZK.
  • Different tires: ATVs are extremely sensitive to uneven tire wear. If you cut through one tire and buy a new one, the difference in tread depth can confuse the electronics and cause the inter-axle clutch to overheat. This means you often have to replace all four tires at once, even if two of them are still in good condition.
  • Vibration and noise: The rear differential and driveshaft are other components that may hum or vibrate. The cost of driveshaft repair for premium used cars starts at 10,000 CZK.

When is a front-wheel-drive car and good tires enough?

If your mushroom-hunting trip takes you along a paved dirt road that even the mail carrier can drive on in a van, 4×4 drive is an unnecessary luxury for you. It handles most situations that an “urban mushroom hunter” will encounter:

  1. Higher ground clearance: To prevent the car’s undercarriage from scraping against tree roots (a front-wheel-drive SUV is sufficient).
  2. High-quality winter/all-season tires: A top-of-the-line tire on a front-wheel-drive vehicle will perform better on wet grass than a worn tire on a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
  3. Electronic traction control (XDS/Grip Control): Modern systems on front-wheel-drive vehicles can slow down a spinning wheel and transfer power to where there is traction.

Autano.cz's Verdict

Buying a used 4x4 for occasional trips to the woods makes no economic sense. Unless you live in the mountains or tow a heavy trailer, you’re better off choosing a well-maintained front-wheel-drive vehicle. You’ll save on fuel, maintenance, and tires. Instead of “sinking” money into maintaining the 4×4 drive shaft and clutch, invest it in top-quality tires. They’ll pull you out of that wet meadow by the woods more reliably than a malfunctioning and neglected all-wheel-drive system.
